Eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking (author of a previous book about “Black Holes” in the sky) is considered by much of the intelligencia of the world to be the smartest man alive. In his new book entitled, “The Grand Design” he claims that God was not necessary to create the universe. He believes that since the law of gravity exists, the universe could have “created itself.”
The obvious problem with this theory is, “From where did the law of gravity come?” Did the law of gravity also “create itself”? And if so, how did that happen?
His new book essentially claims that, “God does not exist.”
If you were asked to debate Stephen Hawking tomorrow on the issue of Creations vs. Evolution, how would you defend your position – without using the Bible? Stephen Hawking doesn’t believe in God or the Bible, so you must use only scientific information to make your case.
Are you prepared to do that? Do you think it can be done? How would you organize your response?

Unless you know the answers to these questions it’s impossible to make sense of your life. If life is meaningless, if we are only here for a few years and then we’re gone forever, then there is no purpose for us to exist? It all seems hopeless.
But there IS a purpose for your life, a purpose that you are here to accomplish that NO ONE else on the face of the earth can accomplish.
Let’s first look at the question: Where Did You Come From?
We’re not talking about your physical birth. This question has to do with Creation vs Evolution. Were you created by a kind and loving God who is your Father, who promises to take care of you, who has a specific, unique purpose for your life now and promises life with Him for eternity?
Or did you, as part of the human race, evolve from slime, or cosmic dust, or maybe even from “nothing” as some scientists believe, in which case your life is meaningless and futile. You came from nothing, you drift through life, you are gone and there is nothing more. Life becomes a cruel joke.
The theory of evolution is promoted as “science” whereas belief in creation is considered to be a religion. The truth is that BOTH creation and evolution are religious beliefs as neither can be proved scientifically. However, the scientific support for creation so far outweighs any supposed “scientific” data on evolution that there really is no contest, at least for the person who is willing to think for himself.
Design:
For example, everything on earth has a design. Design requires a Designer. You freely admit that your car did not “just happen”, it was designed by a designer and built by a car production crew.
The watch on your wrist did not “just happen”, it was designed by a designer. It did not evolve over millions of years and suddenly end up on your wrist.
Yet your hand, that is attached to your wrist that wears your watch, can feel many different sensations: hot, cold, smooth, rough, soft, hard, sensations your watch can’t feel. The hand can respond to the brain’s commands to perform intricate brain surgery, to play the piano, to paint beautiful pictures, things your watch could never do. Your hand can heal itself when it is injured, and it is attached to a body that can reproduce itself to make little ones after its own kind, certainly something no watch can do. Yet you believe that the watch was designed by a designer, but a human being, which is vastly more complex than a watch, just evolved.
Every flower, every leaf, and every blade of grass has a spectacular design. And the closer you look, the higher the magnification you use, the more intricately organized and wonderfully amazing is the complexity of the design.
The machines that man makes to deliver oxygen or consume carbon dioxide are ugly, cumbersome and eventually end up as non-degradable junk, eyesores that pollute the planet. But God’s machines that accomplish the same purpose, “machines” such as plants, trees and flowers, are magnificent, delicate and beautiful. All are totally bio-degradable, they never pollute the environment.
Every aspect of nature proclaims the imprint of a Designer. But most of the world chooses to ignore it.
Fine tuning of earth’s parameters:
What are the parameters necessary for life to exist on earth?
For life to be possible on earth, more than forty different elements must be able to bond together to form molecules, according to astronomer Hugh Ross, Ph.D. Molecular bonding depends on two factors, the strength of the force of electromagnetism and the ratio of the mass of the electron to the mass of the proton.
If the electromagnetic force on earth were significantly larger, atoms would hang on to electrons so tightly that no sharing of electrons with other atoms would be possible and molecules could not form. But if the electromagnetic force were significantly weaker, atoms would not hang on to electrons at all, and again, molecules could not form and life could not exist on earth.
In fact there are around 30 different parameters in the universe that must be present in very narrow ranges for life to exist on earth, parameters such as the gravitational force constant: The strength of the force of gravity determines how hot the nuclear furnaces in the cores of stars will burn. If the gravitational force were stronger than it is, stars would be so hot they would burn up relatively quickly, too quickly and too erratically for life to exist on earth.
A planet capable of sustaining life must be supported by a star that is both stable and long burning. However, if the gravitational force were weaker, stars never would become hot enough to ignite nuclear fusion, says Dr. Ross. In such a universe no elements heavier than hydrogen and helium would be produced, and life could not exist on earth.
Some other parameters that must be fine-tuned are:
A) the expansion rate of the universe: If it were larger, there would be no galaxy formation. If it were smaller the universe would collapse prior to star formation.
B) the velocity of light: If it were faster, stars would be too luminous. If it were slower, stars would not be luminous enough.
C) the average distance between stars: If it were larger, heavy element density would be too thin for rocky planets to form. If it were smaller, planetary orbits would become destabilized.
In order for life to exist on earth, these parameters must be fine-tuned to an accuracy of one part in 1037 or better, according to Dr. Ross. He points out that one part in 1037 is such an incredibly sensitive balance that it is hard to visualize. He gives the following analogy which might help you grasp this concept.
Cover the entire North American continent in dimes all the way to the moon, a height of about 239,000 miles. (In comparison, the money to pay for the U.S. federal government debt would cover one square mile, less than two feet deep with dimes.) Next, pile dimes from here to the moon on a billion other continents the same size as North America. Paint one dime red and mix it into the billion piles of dimes. Blindfold a friend and ask him to pick out one dime. The odds that he will pick the red dime are one in 1037. And this is only ONE of the parameters that is so delicately balanced to allow life to form.
The more accurately and extensively astronomers measure the universe, the more finely tuned they discover it to be. Also, the degree of fine-tuning already measured is utterly amazing -- far beyond what human endeavors can accomplish.
For example, one of the best machines ever built by man allows measurements as accurate as one part in 1023. By comparison, many different characteristics of the universe must be fine-tuned to greater than one part in 1037 for life of any kind to exist. Because of these obvious factors in creation, scientists can conclude statistically that God is AT LEAST a hundred trillion times smarter and more capable than we human beings are with all our resources.
All of this confirms Creation by a Master Designer.
Why in the world would you ever trust a human physician, when you have God as your Physician, the GREATEST Physician in the Universe who, according to scientists, is at least a hundred trillion times smarter than any human doctor!
The intricacies of a cell
The theory of evolution assumes that the chaotic motion of lifeless particles eventually endowed itself with a living awareness of its own existence. It presumes that the chaos and confusion of lifeless, non-living particles produced intelligent living beings who can experience emotions, love their families and appreciate beautiful music. This is nothing more than the worship of nature under the guise of atheism.
When Darwin proposed the theory of evolution, or at least natural selection in the 1800’s, little was known about the inner workings of the human body. Today, according to Robert Gange, Ph.D., it requires a room 24 feet high, 24 feet wide and 24 feet deep with objects as small as marbles to model the human cell. Darwin was completely unaware of the DNA and RNA complexes in a living cell. If one stretches out the DNA in one human body, it would reach from the earth almost to the moon, 239,000 miles. That’s how much DNA is in one human body.
The inside of a cell is absolutely unfathomable in its beauty and exquisite machinery. The proof of God isn’t only in the vast outer reaches of the universe, it is in a little tiny microscopic cell.
Irreducible Complexity
This concept reveals that if any part of an organism is missing, the entire organism cannot function. An example in every-day life is a mouse trap. A mouse trap has five parts, including the wooden platform, the spring, the catch, the hammer and the holding bar. If any one of the five parts is missing, the mouse trap doesn’t work just four-fifths as well, it doesn’t work at all!
A good example in biology is the bacterial flagellum, the tail on a bacterium that provides propulsion. The flagellum is like an outboard motor. It has parts that resemble a propeller, a motor, a drive shaft, bushings, etc. If any one of the forty parts is missing, the flagellum doesn’t work. Therefore, the flagellum could not have evolved piece by piece because if any piece is missing, it doesn’t work at all!
Dr. Jobe Martin, a former believer in evolution, has shown in his books and DVDs that many creatures, including the Bombardier Beetle, the giraffe, the woodpecker, the beaver, and the gecko lizard, to name a few – could not have evolved. They can only exist because they were designed and created as a unit – all at once.

Rapidly Formed Stratification:
The eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington State on May 18, 1980 was one of the most significant geologic events in the United States of the 20th century. It formed – in just days - a little “Grand Canyon of the Toutle River” which is a one-fortieth scale model of the real Grand Canyon, showing that it would not take millions of years for the stratification to occur, but just days.
Upright Deposited Logs:
The Mt St Helens landslide generated waves on Spirit Lake and stripped the forests from the slopes adjacent to the lake. These logs floated freely and became deposited rapidly in an upright position, at various different levels. The Spirit Lake upright deposited stumps have considerable implications for interpreting “petrified forests” in the stratigraphic record.
How Accurate are Carbon-14 and other radioactive dating methods?
The forms issued by radioisotope laboratories for submission with samples to be dated commonly ask how old the sample is expected to be. Why? If the techniques were absolutely objective and reliable, such information would not be necessary.
There are many dating methods that give “dates” that are wrong for rocks of known age. Carbon Dating in many cases seriously embarrasses evolutionists by giving ages that are much younger than those expected from their model of early history.
Polonium Halos
A speck of polonium in molten rock can be compared to an Alka-Seltzer dropped into a glass of water. The beginning of effervescence is equated to the moment that polonium atoms began to emit radioactive particles. In molten rock the traces of those radioactive particles would disappear as quickly as the Alka-Seltzer bubbles in water. But if the water were instantly frozen, the bubbles would be preserved. Likewise, polonium halos could have formed only if the rapidly “effervescing” specks of polonium had been instantly encased in solid rock, as in the flood.
Dinosaurs are NOT “Pre-historic.” Dinosaurs have always lived with man!
Dinosaurs have always lived with man. Evidence of dinosaurs living today is plentiful, with pictures being taken of their dead carcasses that have washed up on shore. But the accounts only appear in local papers, never in those from larger cities. Why? Because the presence of Dinosaurs living with “man” upsets the evolutionary propaganda that embraces a “pre-historic” age of dinosaurs living before man “evolved.”
No Transitional Forms
One major recurring embarrassment to evolutionists is the absence of transitional forms. If, indeed, humanity evolved from dust, or slime or tiny microscopic forms, at least a few transitional forms should exist, showing fish turning into land animals, and land animals into man. But NO transitional forms exist except in drawings or paintings or man-made models in museums.
Over the years there has been intermittent great jubilation and media heralding over the supposed appearance of a transitional form, but invariably they have all turned out to be hoaxes. For years the evolutionists tried to explain this glaring lack of transitional forms with the excuse that the changes occurred so slowly from species to species, that none could be found.
However, in recent years they have changed their tune. Now they exclaim that the transitions occur so rapidly that they cannot be found.
Even though school textbooks and numerous other books are replete with pictures of transitional forms, if you pin an evolution-believing scientist to the wall, if he’s honest, he will have to admit that no transitional forms have ever been found.
Everything goes from Order to Disorder
The theory of evolution teaches that order came out of chaos, that order evolved from disorder, that vastly complex human beings came from slime or even “nothing”, according to some “scientists.” Yet everything in our world testifies to the opposite. Paper trash left in a garbage dump does not turn into a book. Rotting fruits and vegetables will not eventually become fresh and delicious. Human beings do not have more youthful bodies at 90 years of age than they do at 20.
On the contrary, scientists know that the Second Law of Thermodynamics states that everything goes from order to disorder. Paint on a house becomes weathered and worn, chrome bumpers rust and fall apart, human beings deteriorate with age and eventually die and disintegrate back to the earth. Everything goes from order to disorder, totally contrary to the theory of evolution.
So how could the theory of evolution of the earth and its inhabitants be true if EVERYTHING in nature proves it wrong?
Creationists believe that a loving, personal God created everything perfect. Then sin entered and the earth and everything in it began to decay as predicted by the Second Law of Thermodynamics and as documented by everything we see in our world.
All of this evidence is thrown aside by the evolutionists. They suffer from a severe intellectual defect - a complete lack of wisdom. Knowledge is obtained by the five senses. We gather information by what we see (and read), what we hear, touch, smell and taste. These are the only ways human beings can gather facts. But in order to use these facts to reach the correct conclusions, we must have wisdom. But wisdom comes ONLY from God!
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God who gives to all men liberally. . .but let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man think that he shall receive anything from the Lord.” James 1:5-8
“The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.” (1 Cor 3:19)
Why do scientists embrace evolution and spurn Creation?
The reason the theory of evolution has gained such prominence and acceptance in this age is not because there is scientific evidence to support it, it is because scientists have decided that the idea of creation is unacceptable for the following reason: Creation requires a Creator God. If there is a God, we are accountable to Him and we cannot live our lives as we please. God has control over our lives, we cannot control Him. We cannot make our own rules, thus the degenerate heart of man finds Creation an unacceptable answer.
The reason scientists refuse to accept creation is NOT a matter of scientific proof - it is a matter of moral accountability. They simply refuse to be morally accountable to a Creator God.
Getting to know God includes learning the wonders of God by studying His marvelous Creation. Nature is an easily-accessible textbook that will help us learn about God’s magnificent character, His loving methods of operation, and His constant care for His creatures.
Why Does Stephen Hawking Spurn God?
Much to his own detriment, Stephen Hawking rejects God. Hawking has been confined to a wheel chair for years, unable to take care of himself, or even talk, severely debilitated with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Yet God has PROMISED to “heal ALL our diseases” (Psalm 103:3) If we “follow His laws, His commandments and His decrees.” (Deut 7:11-15)
In that same passage, Deut 7:11-15, God promises to “keep us free from every disease if we follow His laws, commandments and decrees.” But since Stephen Hawking does not believe in God or in God’s promises and is unwilling to change the way he lives, thinks, acts, eats, and handles stress, he reaps what he has sown. He is not a man to be extolled, but a man to be pitied.
“The natural man cannot understand the things of the Spirit of God; they are foolishness to him; neither can he know them, because spiritual things are (only) spiritually discerned.” 1 Cor 2:14
Stephen Hawking, though considered by the world to be “brilliant” in the world’s knowledge, he has no wisdom - because ALL wisdom comes from God. Hawking has no ability to understand spiritual things, therefore he is destined to be completely disabled and unable to do anything for himself - because he has rejected God – the Great Physician!
